The West Kootenay Métis Society is more than a community—it’s a living connection to Métis history, culture, and traditions in this region. Explore who we are, where we come from, and how we celebrate our identity today.

About Us
The West Kootenay Métis Society is a Métis community organization based in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia. Our members come together to celebrate Métis culture, share traditions, and build connections through events, gatherings, workshops, and cultural activities.

Our History
Métis people are one of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, with roots tracing back to the 1700s. Communities first formed through the unions of European fur traders and Indigenous families, developing a distinct language, culture, and way of life. In the West Kootenays, Métis families have contributed to the region’s history and culture for generations. Our organization preserves these stories and milestones, connecting the past with the present.

Our Culture
Métis culture thrives in celebrations of food, music, storytelling, creative arts, and the preservation of traditions and our history. The West Kootenay Métis Society keeps these practices alive through monthly events, cultural workshops, and community gatherings. Experience our heritage firsthand and discover the customs, arts, and traditions that make Métis culture unique in the West Kootenays.
